The new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) represents one of the most significant changes within the packaging industry in recent years. With this legislation, the European Union aims to reduce packaging waste, improve recycling, and accelerate the transition toward a circular economy. As a result, the PPWR introduces stricter requirements for packaging in the areas of recyclability, material usage, reuse, and sustainability.
The ultimate objective is that all packaging placed on the European market from 2030 onwards must be recyclable at an economically viable scale. In addition, new requirements are being introduced regarding:
- Design for Recycling (DfR)
- Reduction of packaging weight and unnecessary material usage
- Use of recycled content
- Restriction of substances of concern
- Improved sorting and recyclability
- Transparency and technical documentation throughout the supply chain
For producers of plastic packaging, this means that packaging must not only be functional and food-safe, but also demonstrably contribute to circularity and more efficient material usage.
At Moens Mouldings, we are already actively preparing for this today. Through continuous investments in lightweight packaging, design optimization, recyclability, and advanced production technologies, we support our customers in the transition toward future-proof packaging solutions.
As a strategic packaging partner, we do not only manufacture packaging; we also help customers prepare their packaging portfolio for future PPWR requirements. Thanks to our innovative in-house R&D, Moldflow analyses, expertise in Injection Compression Moulding (ICM), and advanced 3D metrology, we develop lighter, stronger, and more efficient packaging solutions without compromising food safety, quality, or performance.
A recent example of this is our redesign of the 500g Eurotub:
